2011 Nike Football Camp - Houston

We had fun with this group! Some noticeable talent and all were enjoyable to coach. Had some time to get to know some of the guys a little, which always adds to the memories. Regardless of how many from this go on to play high-level college football, all of them will be better players next Fall.

  1. Garrett Hope (The Woodlands HS, TX) – Very solid in all aspects of the game: accelerates well to the ball, finds and fills space well and is relentless when rushing the passer. All of 6’3” and solid – he’ll gain some good lbs when he wraps up baseball and can focus on football. Very coachable and wants to learn – there is a lot he can digest and be asked of him for Saturday afternoon. There’s just something that is noteworthy for a guy who doesn’t show any obviously weak links; consistency and the ability to stay healthy (or play slightly banged up without a major drop off) are very desirable traits. This guy showed this all at Houston.
  2. Ryan Flannigan (Thurgood Marshall HS, Missouri City, TX) – Really good feet and extraordinary athleticism. Superlative ability to break on the ball when he finds it. Lean muscular build gives him the ideal frame to put on muscle without becoming bulky and losing his quicks. Definitely the best athlete of all the LBs today!
  3. Michael Hargis (Manor HS, TX) – Great frame and range. Bends his knees well for a longer LB with decent natural agility. Very assertive hands at the point of attack. Obviously, able to put on substantial size when he gets to college. Always, seemed to find a way to get it down during match-ups and skelly.
  4. Skylar Nelson (Alamo Heights, San Antonio, TX) – Showed some good things at TCU, and he’s really improved since then. What he may lack in raw athleticism, he gains in smart play and hustle. The fella learns on the fly and rarely makes the same mistake twice. Runs well enough to carry potential pass threats up the seam and find a way to put the breaks on and get down and stay around the ball. Takes up a ton of space in zone coverage – he got a lot of hands on balls during the ½ skelly period. Furthermore, he leads by example – first in line in everything he does and competes from pillar to post.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Kamane Thomas (Elkins, Missouri City, TX) – Great job in breaking and re-directing routes, coming to balance and finishing plays. He is the best of this group of honorable mentions.
  • Webster Jones (Angleton HS, TX) – Extremely coachable and may have been our best guy in 1on1 coverage.
  • Keith Ewing (Bellaire HS, TX) – Did some really nice things in coverage, both zone and man – very comfortable in space. Solidly built strong and athletic.
  • Stefan Koch (Richmond Foster HS, Richmond, TX) – More of a safety… fleet of foot and great reactions. High effort and executes with a plan when operating in space.
  • Miles McKinney (Borger HS, TX) – First in line, top-shelf effort and strives to improve every rep – this guy deserves to play college football as much as anyone we’ve seen this year.
  • Jordin Harrison (Dobie HS, Houston, TX) – Solid lookin’ sophomore, I’m sure this guy would be a monster in pads
  • Dedrick Guy (Fairley HS, Memphis, TX) – Big dude who was finding his way with those who play from a 2-point stance. Might be future DE, but did some adequate stuff in space.
  • Isaiah Santos (Klein Collins HS, Spring, TX) – Only a freshman! He’s at a Nike camp holding his own – ‘nuff said.
